Understanding Cyclone Season

Cyclone season in Vanuatu runs from November to March, a time when tropical weather systems can occasionally form. While cyclones may sound daunting, Vanuatu has a wealth of experience in managing and recovering from such events. Past cyclones like Pam (Friday 13th March 2015) and Kevin demonstrated the resilience of our communities and the speed at which we can bounce back.

Some energy and team work and we go from leaves everywhere to...

Vanuatu's journey to coping with these weather events has come a long way. Generally there is a loss of a power during the storm, roads will have trees on them and when there is no power there is no gas and water as they rely on power to work - with each of the cyclones of the past it has led to more and more improvements in disaster preparedness and building practices, ensuring better protection for future storms.

More recently Cyclone Kevin, which struck in March 2023, was a Category 4 storm that hit Vanuatu just a couple of days after Cyclone Judy. Both cyclones caused extensive damage, particularly in remote areas like Tanna Island, where access was initially cut off due to damaged roads and power lines. Despite the destruction, there were no reported casualties, thanks to strong community preparedness and international aid efforts. There is ongoing support to those who remain affected through damage to housing and schools, in the more remote area's, and for that reason we have written articles around bringing donations during your trip, as they can help make a difference.

Strengthening Vanuatu’s Path to Recovery and Resilience

In the face of natural disasters, the Vanuatu government with the support of local and global partners, has developed the following roadmap for sustainable recovery and future-proofing the nation - Recovery and Resilience Plan 2023-2027 . With an emphasis on community-led approaches, adaptive strategies, and partnerships, the plan ensures that Vanuatu is prepared to not only respond effectively to future challenges but to grow in their aftermath. https://dsppac.gov.vu/images/roc/roc_23/pdna/recovery--resilience-plan_compressed-1.pdf

The quick response and recovery following Cyclone Kevin, bolstered by local readiness and humanitarian assistance, are proof of Vanuatu’s capacity to manage such events. This resilience makes Vanuatu a safe and dependable destination for tourists who want to experience the country's natural beauty and vibrant culture, even during cyclone season.

Media and Perception: Understanding the Full Picture

When cyclones occur in Vanuatu, the media often focuses on the most dramatic images and stories, such as devastated villages or damaged infrastructure. While these accounts are not irrelevant and they do highlight the challenges faced by affected communities - they can sometimes give the impression that the entire country is severely impacted or "wiped out." This isn’t usually the case, but it does look a mess until we can all get out as a community and tidy up - as you can see in our resort photo's we get stuck in as a team, and for those guests who want to help they are welcome too and for those who aren't able we can continue to support and service them.

In reality, the effects of cyclones can vary widely depending on their path and intensity. Many areas remain untouched or experience only minor disruptions. For example, key tourist hubs like Port Vila often recover quickly, with essential services such as the airport and resorts remaining operational.

Tourists visiting after a cyclone often find that their experiences are unaffected, or that their presence contributes directly to the rebuilding and revitalization of the local economy.

Built for Resilience: Nakatumble’s Preparedness

At Nakatumble, we place the safety and comfort of our guests, staff, and community at the heart of everything we do. Our property is designed not just to weather cyclones but to provide a sanctuary of security and peace during uncertain times.

Leadership with Expertise

We value our staff and their families as we work together through trying times!

Romina and Bill, the dedicated hosts of Nakatumble, bring 14 years of invaluable experience in Vanuatu and are active members of the fire safety and ambulance community. Their training and hands-on knowledge equip them to navigate emergencies with professionalism and composure, ensuring the safety of everyone on-site.

Thoughtful Design

Our accommodation and residences are built with durable concrete structures to provide a secure environment in any weather. To ensure uninterrupted water availability, we have three bore water sources, 40,000 liters of rainwater storage tanks, and a separate 1000 litre supply of purified drinking water. These systems guarantee resilience and comfort, no matter the circumstances.

Location Advantage: Natural Protection from Storm Surges

Nakatumble enjoys a strategically fortunate position at the end of Devil’s Point Road. Cyclones affecting Vanuatu typically approach from the north, northeast, or occasionally the west. Our location has spared Nakatumble from storm surges as our positioning provide a natural buffer against these events. Additionally, a mountain located behind Nakatumble serves as a barrier against direct winds, further enhancing the property’s resilience. All of this combined with our thoughtful design and robust preparedness, our location offers additional peace of mind during cyclone season.

Reliable Infrastructure

We’re equipped with solar power panels, batteries and a 20 kva generator, guaranteeing continuous energy supply, so you never have to worry about disruptions.

At Nakatumble, we also produce biogas for cooking, providing up to three hours of cooking gas daily. Paired with our induction stove, reliable refrigeration, and well-stocked food and beverage supplies, we ensure that cocktails, cold beers, coffee, and great meals are always on the menu—even in challenging times.

While the journey through these moments can be tiring and emotional, our commitment to hospitality and care remains unwavering.

Telecommunications and Power Safety

At Nakatumble, our considered infrastructure supports continuous operations during challenging weather. Our underground power for the property enhances safety by reducing the risk of outages and damage during cyclones. This infrastructure also minimises hazards associated with downed power lines, giving guests added reassurance.

To ensure you stay informed and connected regardless of the weather, we provide Starlink satellite internet, which offers seamless communication and real-time updates. This commitment to reliable power and connectivity ensures that you can maintain peace of mind and stay connected throughout your stay.

Safety Measures

Our team is well-trained in emergency protocols, and we maintain a stock of essential medical supplies, including antibiotics and sutures, so we’re prepared to handle any situation.

Food Security

We maintain provisions to sustain guests and staff for up to six weeks, offering peace of mind that everyone is well cared for, even if there were to be extended periods of uncertainty. However, Nakatumble to this day has bounced back within hours of the cyclone passing and the team get on with clearing any debris, or assisting neighbours and guests comforts resume.

Minimal Impact on Travel

Vanuatu’s airport historically has remained operational during cyclone season, ensuring minimal disruption to travel plans and the continued delivery of resources into the country. During a predicted event, we also take the added step of keeping our vehicles on higher ground, should we need to assist guests with transportation needs during such times.
