Vanuatu Earthquake: December 17th 2024 and the Resilience of the People of Vanuatu and Its Visitors

Updated: Dec 30, 2024

On December 17th, Vanuatu was rocked by a powerful earthquake that left Port Vila and surrounding communities reeling. The tragedy brought with it the loss of lives, the recovery of loved ones, disrupted routines, and damaged homes and infrastructure. For a nation accustomed to cyclones and shifting weather patterns, this earthquake was a stark reminder of the challenges nature can bring, and the resilience required to endure them.

This event tested not only the strength of our people but also the visitors who found themselves in Vanuatu at the time. It was a moment where roles and responsibilities as locals and tourists came together to support one another in the face of adversity.

This story isn't to not show profound respect to those that lost their lives, but to highlight our countries capacity to adapt and rebuild. It’s about the people of Vanuatu, their enduring spirit, and the countless acts of courage and kindness that are creating the path forward. This story is also to highlight how Nakatumble responded and how the property and staff are, as we are asked by previous guests and future guests - this is for you!

The Immediate Aftermath

The wave effect reduced the pool, but there were no cracks in the pool!

In the immediate aftermath, communications were down. Many of us focused on assessing our immediate surroundings, unaware of the full impact in Port Vila. At Nakatumble, within our immediate bubble, we rallied together. We checked on each other, inspected the property, cared for our farm animals, looked after our onsite staff and guests, and began tidying up.

Thankfully, the damage at Nakatumble was minor - especially in comparison to what we later learned as updates trickled in via our Starlink connection.  Despite our initial relief, our thoughts & actions quickly turned outward. We worried about our staff members who weren’t onsite at the time, their families, and the neighbouring communities. In these uncertain hours, we realised the importance of extending help beyond our gates.

Opening Our Doors

We opened our property to those who needed shelter, whether their homes were damaged, or they were unable to return to their original holiday accommodations. We provided water, food, and connectivity to those on Devil’s Point Road.

We welcomed new and unexpected guests, fed them, shared stories, and processed the wave of emotions brought on by the events unfolding. The tremors kept us awake through the night, but we continued checking in on one another.

The stone wall running the length of our property fell over

Venturing into Port Vila

The very next day, we headed into Port Vila to assess how we could help. What we saw was sobering: streets lined with debris, businesses cleaning up, and residents working tirelessly to restore some semblance of normalcy.

We returned later that day, with more guests who had nowhere else to go, welcoming them into Nakatumble and continuing to provide a haven. These efforts reminded us of the deep interconnectedness of our community - how helping one person often means helping many more through the ripple effects of kindness.

During this time, we continued to focus on supporting our neighbours who had lost power and water. Being off grid with solar energy, a generator, and a bore, we were able to assist. We piped one bore to the roadside so locals could fill up as needed and ran another pipe to our neighbour’s house to help them assist their extended family.

Our efforts extended beyond physical aid. We provided emotional support, banding together to piece together who was safe, who needed help, and what tasks were most urgent. Day by day, hour by hour, we rallied as a community to meet the immediate needs of those around us.

Within hours the pool was full, the kids could try and shake of their fear and cool off, and our much loved clam shell that guests add shells to all the time, survived, and was back in position ready for future guests to add their memories from along our shores!

A recap on Nakatumble’s Preparedness and design has prepared us to be ready and able to support:

At Nakatumble, we place the safety and comfort of our guests, staff, and community at the heart of everything we do. Our property is designed not just to weather cyclones, and now we can sadly add an earthquake, but to provide a sanctuary of security and peace during uncertain times.

Leadership with Expertise

Our incredible staff getting the kitchen cleaned up so we could feed and look after our guests and staff...and that night even more people arrived as we could take them in!

Romina and Bill, the dedicated hosts of Nakatumble, bring 14 years of invaluable experience in Vanuatu and are active members of the fire safety and ambulance community. Their training and hands-on knowledge equip them to navigate emergencies with professionalism and composure, ensuring the safety of everyone on-site.

Thoughtful Design

Our accommodation and residences are built with durable concrete structures to provide a secure environment in any weather. To ensure uninterrupted water availability, we have three bore water sources, 40,000 liters of rainwater storage tanks, and a separate 1000 litre supply of purified drinking water. These systems guarantee resilience and comfort, no matter the circumstances.

Within hours, we prepared our large vessels from recycled bottles that we store and keep for emergencies plus our water tanks were operational along with our bore water - being prepared has meant we can help more people!

Reliable Infrastructure

We’re equipped with solar power panels, batteries and a 20 kva generator, guaranteeing continuous energy supply, so you never have to worry about disruptions.

At Nakatumble, we also produce biogas for cooking, providing up to three hours of cooking gas daily. Paired with our induction stove, refrigeration, and well-stocked food and beverage supplies.

While the journey through these moments can be tiring and emotional, our commitment to care and hospitality remains unwavering.

Telecommunications and Power Safety

At Nakatumble, our considered infrastructure supports continuous operations during challenging weather. Our underground power for the property enhances safety by reducing the risk of outages and damage during cyclones. This infrastructure also minimises hazards associated with downed power lines, giving guests added reassurance.

To ensure you stay informed and connected regardless of the conditions, we provide Starlink satellite internet, which offers seamless communication and real-time updates. This commitment to reliable power and connectivity ensures that you can maintain peace of mind and stay connected throughout your stay.

Safety Measures

Our team is well-trained in emergency protocols, and we maintain a stock of essential medical supplies, including antibiotics and sutures, so we’re prepared to handle any situation. Please see further down details on how you can help us restock our supplies.

Food Security

We maintain provisions to sustain guests and staff for up to six weeks, offering peace of mind that everyone is well cared for, even if there were to be extended periods of uncertainty.

Whether you’re here to unwind or happen to be visiting during an unforeseen event, you can rest assured that you’re in capable hands.

24 hours later, the teamwork continued, as our grounds team worked to rebuild the wall, and Andrea is looking after guests with a smile!

Looking Ahead

As the government’s seven-day state of emergency hopefully draws to a close, we turn our attention to the next chapter: rebuilding. Commercial flights have resumed, and improved communication networks, power and water are allowing more areas and families to reconnect and share updates.

While challenges remain, the resilience of the people of Vanuatu is undeniable. At Nakatumble, we are committed to supporting our neighbours, local villages in Mele and where our staff live, just to name a few as we continue to provide for those in need.

Together, we will rebuild!

International Response: Support from Neighbours Near and Far

How You Can Help

Tourists visiting Vanuatu after the earthquake can bring donations that meet the immediate and ongoing needs of the affected communities. These items should be practical, easy to transport, and comply with customs regulations.

Here’s a list of suggested donations:

  • Non-perishable food items – this can be via a donation once you are here, and if you are a guest at Nakatumble you can add to your final payment at the end of your holiday for 2kg bags of rice and more that Romina and the team will then distribute on your behalf.

  • Basic first aid supplies like Dettol, antiseptic creams, Antihistamine, anti fungal cream, Savlon, Betadine, Gastro stop, Movicol, bandages, Hydralite - this one is VERY important etc.

  • Solar torches and lights, and water bottles they can reuse.

  • Personal-care items (soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, feminine care products, etc.

  • Making donations in Vanuatu at the local Hardware stores for tools for rebuilding e.g., hammers, nails, tarps, etc for businesses like ProMedic to restock their supplies.

  • Make donations to the local vet

  • Clothing & school supplies – these usually are helpful, but in these circumstances the above items are more important right now!
